Summary

What if the story of the golden calf is not primarily about Israel’s failure, but about God’s faithfulness?  In Exodus 32, the Israelites grow impatient with God and create a golden calf, something they can see, control, and worship on their own terms. But as Pastor Timothy Brassell reveals in this powerful, Christ-centered message, there is something far greater unfolding in this familiar story.

Too often, we read Scripture through the lens of human sin, guilt, and moral improvement, missing the Good News of the Father revealed in Jesus Christ. We imagine a God whose love must be earned, whose anger must be overcome, or whose heart must somehow be changed toward us. But Jesus reveals a very different truth: God is not waiting for us to change His heart toward us. He is at work changing our hearts to reflect His own!

Through Moses’ intercession, we begin to see something remarkable. A glimpse of Jesus Christ, the One who enters fully into our humanity, takes our sin upon Himself, and accomplishes the reconciliation we could never accomplish for ourselves.  The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not divided in Their love for humanity. They are united in Their purpose to redeem, restore, and bring us into the life and fellowship for which we were created.  And even when we cannot see what God is doing, His gracious work in Jesus Christ is already underway.

REFLECTIVE MOMENT  Are we trying to shape God around our expectations, fears, and desires, or are we learning to recognize how He is shaping us through Jesus Christ?  What if, even in the midst of our failures, God is not turning away from us but drawing us more deeply into the truth of who He has always been? The Good News is not that we have finally learned how to hold on to God, but that in Jesus Christ, God has already acted to hold on to us.

Watch the full sermon as Pastor Tim takes us beyond the familiar story of the golden calf to discover Jesus Christ at work in a way we may never have recognized before and the extraordinary hope of a God who never stops working for our good.
